The cholangiocarcinoma (CC) is a rare malign disease with a prevalence of 1 – 3 patients/ 100 000 people worldwide. Thailand is leading country with up to 85 patients/ 100 000 people, China has the largest number of CC – more than 50.000 patients. Beginning of February 2017 the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation America hold its 4th annual conference. Approximately 300 people – patients, caregivers, medical doctors, nurses and researchers from 16 nations were attending this event.

The first two days the conference focused on patients and caregivers, their needs and a communication between medical people, researchers, patients and caregivers was set up. During the following days new therapies and other scientific findings were presented. At the end of the conference the following outcame was presented:

Only a complete surgical removal of the CC can cure this cancer. Is a resection of the tumor impossible the 5 years survival rate is 0%. 80% of patients not eligible for surgery have an average survival time of less then 12 month. Current therapy regimes achieve up to 12 month additional survival time, often reducing the quality of life to a high degree.

The last decades showed an higher increase in numbers of the CC compared to all other cancer types. The age of the patients is also declining, the onset of a CC was 60 years and older. Now a day patients with an age of 50 years and younger can be seen. The reasons for this development is not known.

On February 4, the conference was closed. The next annual conference of the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation America
